Video overlaid with drawing to represent third eye/ sixth chakra.

What works: black and white, similar drawing of eyes to video of eyes

What doesn’t work: still image with moving footage doesn’t flow well, not a fan of my drawing, lines are too harsh over the soft footage of Gabby

Having read about Hinduism and finding it highly informative, I would like to incorporate it in some way within my final piece. Since I started to learn about the eyes during psychology lessons in 2011, eye contact and communication with others has been something that has changed significantly in my life. It’s something that I find hard not to think about now when I have a conversation with someone else, as it is not so much of a natural process being always on my mind, especially during times like these where I am looking into it more and more each day. After brainstorming a few ideas, such as overlaying drawings with videos, overlaying photographs and overlaying videos to create this idea of the third eye, I think the most effective and appropriate way of representing this (considering my main focus is video art) will be to overlay video footage with more video footage.

Looking into religions and what they think of about eyes is an interesting and very inspiring process. Hindus share the belief that there are six chakras in the body all of connect to the mind, body and soul. The sixth chakra, the third eye or ‘anja’ (meaning brow), is a concept which refers to an ‘invisible eye’ which provides perceptions beyond ordinary sight. It provides a realm to which one can find religious visions, clairvoyance, precognition or out of body experiences.

Looking into this has opened up a new way of thinking about the connection between our eyes and soul being that this religion relates the two so much as the eyes being the pathway into the body and to our souls. This third eye is often associated also with the pineal gland which is located in the frontal lobe of the cranium.

By cropping the face and muting the conversation we are forced to focus on the eyes and their movement. Edited the footage to black and white to create a simplistic appearance to the video, remove focus on background and shift focus solely to the eye movement.
